White 48mm 80mm Polypropylene PP Mooring Boat Towing Marine Rope for Ship 200m
An 8-strand braided polypropylene rope is a synthetic rope known primarily for its excellent buoyancy, low cost, and resistance to water and chemicals. Its construction features eight individual strands braided in a precise, interlocking pattern around a central core, which is typically hollow. This design creates a firm, yet flexible and smooth, rope.
Buoyancy: This is PP's most notable feature. It floats on water indefinitely, making it the ideal choice for applications in and around water.
Lightweight: It has a very low density, making it easy to handle and transport.
Chemical Resistance: Highly resistant to water, oils, and most chemicals, preventing rot and mildew.
Low Cost: One of the most inexpensive synthetic ropes available.
Considerations:
UV Degradation: It has poor resistance to prolonged ultraviolet (UV) light exposure from sunlight, which causes it to become brittle and weak unless it is specially treated (e.g., with UV inhibitors).
Abrasion Resistance: Lower abrasion resistance compared to nylon or polyester.
Low Melting Point: Sensitive to heat and friction; can melt or soften at relatively low temperatures.
Strength: Has a low strength-to-weight ratio compared to other synthetics like nylon or polyester. It is suitable for light to medium-duty applications (e.g., a 1/2" / 12mm PP rope may have an MBS of approx. 3,600 lbs / 1,630 kg).
Elongation: Exhibits moderate stretch (higher than polyester but lower than nylon), but it is not typically used for applications requiring shock absorption.
Durability: The braided construction is robust, but the material's susceptibility to UV and abrasion is the primary limiting factor for its lifespan.
