This is a premium rope construction with specific benefits:
Nylon: The gold standard material for mooring and anchoring due to one key property: High Elasticity (15-25% stretch at working load). This elasticity acts as a critical shock absorber, cushioning the boat against wave action, wind gusts, and sudden loads. It is also very strong, tough, and resistant to fatigue.
Double Braided (DB): This is a two-in-one rope: a braided core inside a braided cover.
Inner Core (Braided): Provides the majority (typically ~50-70%) of the rope's tensile strength and its elastic properties.
Outer Cover (Braided): Protects the core and provides abrasion resistance, UV protection, and handling comfort. It also contributes to strength and structure.
16 Strand: Specifically refers to the construction of the outer cover. A 16-carrier braid creates a very smooth, round, and dense jacket. It is more abrasion-resistant, more visually uniform, and often more expensive than a standard 8- or 12-strand cover. It's a mark of higher quality.
Blue Color: The classic marine color. It's highly visible against water and sky, fades gracefully, and is easy for manufacturers to stock in volume.
This rope is ideally suited for both purposes, but for slightly different reasons:
A. As a Mooring/Dock Line:
Perfect Fit. The high elasticity of nylon is the #1 requirement for safe dock lines. It absorbs the energy of the boat surging against the dock, preventing damage to cleats and hulls. The double braid is soft on hands and has excellent knot-holding ability.
B. As an Anchor Line (Rode):
Excellent Choice, especially as part of a "Rode". For anchoring, it is most commonly used in a combination setup: a length of chain (10-30m) spliced to a long length of nylon rope.
The chain provides weight (catenary shock absorption), resists seabed abrasion, and helps the anchor lay flat.
The nylon rope provides the main elastic shock absorption during wind shifts and waves, and allows for a much longer, lighter scope than an all-chain rode. It is critical that the nylon portion is in the water column, not on the seabed, to avoid chafe.
This enormous range explains its universal popularity. It serves everyone from dinghy owners to ship captains.
6mm - 12mm: Small boats, dinghies, tenders, sailboat sheets/lines. The "hot sale" segment for the vast recreational boating market.
14mm - 24mm: The core "hot sale" range for mooring and anchoring on typical cruising sailboats and motor yachts (30-60 feet). This is the most commonly purchased size bracket worldwide.
26mm - 40mm: Large yachts, sportfishing boats, and commercial workboats. Used for primary dock lines and heavy-duty anchoring.
44mm - 60mm: Commercial & Industrial Grade. Used for ship dock lines, tugboat lines, and heavy industrial marine applications. A 60mm double-braid nylon is an immensely strong and heavy rope.
Unmatched Shock Absorption: The primary reason for its dominance in mooring.
Durability & Abrasion Resistance: Nylon is tough, and the dense 16-strand braid protects it well.
Excellent Handling: Double braid is supple, easy to coil, splice, and tie. It doesn't kink like 3-strand.
Strength: Nylon has a high breaking strength for its diameter and cost.
Versatility: One rope type reliably serves two major functions (mooring and anchoring).
Proven Technology: This is a trusted, decades-old construction. Boat owners, marinas, and captains know exactly what they're getting.
